Countdown Begins

Just about 48 hours until I hit the start line of the Acura Toronto 10-Miler. I was laughing when I got my email confirmation, because I'm in the last start corral. The time I had given as my expected finish for a half marathon was 3 hours, heh heh.

Well, I've still been fiddling around with what to do about training races. Do I continue with my marathon plan as is, and just treat the race as a training run? Or do I taper and consider it a Race. It seems that Pfitzinger pretty much continues with training as is when it comes to tune up races, yet for me I wonder if at least a small taper is good.

Anyhow, this week I did taper, and cut my mileage quite a bit. I ended up feeling a little down, though, and think next time while I might still cut back, I'll do more days and also cross train on the off days. I ran 5 miles today, and tomorrow will do about 3 miles, and hopefully I'll be good to go on race day.

The race should be interesting, since Toronto is in the midst of a municipal strike, and thus there has been no garbage pick up for the last 22 days. It also seems that there is limited parking around the start line area, which just stresses me out. I think that's why I tend to gravitate to smaller races generally. I just want to park near the race and have my stuff and not worry, right.

Anyhow, for the first time, I will also be doing race kit pick-up on the morning of, as we are going to an amusement park with the kids today, and I work tomorrow, and those are the only scheduled kit days. It's just as well, though, since being early will allow me to take care of the parking with ample time to check out the area and walk around a bit. I will be there for about 6:45, and start time is 8 am.

I'm planning on having a Luna Bar before I leave the house on Sunday, and the maybe a gel 45 minutes before the start. I usually have nothing on race mornings, but think this might be a good idea.

A really big coffee is always helpful right before the race.
I think my spouse is in the last corral as well.
Good luck on sunday.

As for taper or not. I usually do a one day taper if the race is not my target race for the season. I dont like to pull back on the training mileage too much. I just count the race as a speed workout

Thanks Tracy and Chris for the well wishes and for the tips!!!!

I really appreciate hearing about how you approach tune up races, it gives me a much better idea what to do going forward. And, Tracy, I just may try that bagel idea for breakfast! In fact, by coincidence I did even have a bagel and lox for lunch today :)

Good luck also to your gal, Chris, you never know we might be side by side and not even know it!
